The 9th ranking tournament of the year was the Euro 5's at Norwich - which was 11 games, 5 games singles and 6 games team event and ranking points going to the individual's placing in the all events. - This event sometimes throw up a few surprises and it usually attracts quite a decent turnout. 97 men and 23 ladies took part making up 24 teams. Two quite tough patterns were put down and the scoring by some bowlers was well short of the usual averages. Not only did the bowlers have to endure the tough conditions, but they also had to search high and low for decent hotel accommodation in the Norwich area as every Jehovah witness in the UK took the weekend off knocking on doors and pestering ordinary people to attend a convention in the Norwich area.
Team event
The London Proshop started strongly, but opened up on sunday with a 883 game and that cost them any real chance of taking the title and they slipped down to 3rd on 5971 a 199.03 average. Not only did London Proshop miss out on first, but they also lost 2nd by 8 pins to the First Arrow team (leon devlin, Daniel Wenner, Mark Wells, danny Ayling and some other bloke) - So the title went to the Powerplay 1 team who this year were represented by Darren Cundy, Rob Thurlby, Matt Giles, Matt Chamberlain, Jon Zadel who shot a total of 6148 a 204.93 average.
Singles
The pattern in the singles played a little easier then the one used in the team and with people more used to playing in a singles format the scoring improved. In the Men's singles the top 3 places were all taken by Powerplay bowlers. In 3rd was Matt Chamberlain on 1151 a 230.2 average, with Thurlby in 2nd on 1154 and taking top spot was Darren Cundy on 1172 a 234.40 average. The ladies singles saw Hayley White have a final game of 145 which meant she had to settle for 3rd on 1059, and Laura Marcham take 2nd on 1081 but winning by a mile and having what I think might have been the tournament high game of 278 was Lisa John on 1164 a 232.80 average.
All Events
In the blokes all events there was only 16 men averaging over 200 and I take my hat off to most of them, because to average a deuce on that garbage was a fine achievement. In 3rd place was the Rob Turlby who's very simplistic game suited this condition. In 2nd was local villain and alleged fruit machine robber Leon Devlin on 2369. But taking maximum points was Matt Chamberlain on 2491 a 226.45 average.
Ladies all events Laura Marcham took 3rd with Hayley White in 2nd on 2350 a 213.63 average. But stretching her lead in rankings to what must now be a unassailable margin is Lisa John who shot a 2421 a 220.09 average. Them Motive balls must be really working for her.
YOGI ....
God there were plenty of them, personally I knew i was going to struggle from frame 1 of game 1 when I threw the first one a tad wide which didn't even shape a board then pulled the next one by a board and it hooked a*sehole to blooming breakfast - then I had to bowl 7 of my 11 games on 1 and bloody 2 - livid. Chatters was down there again, as he ought to be, averaging 183. Along with myself all the lefties struggled with Damain White socks Gray and Adam Michael's down the leader board. But I have to give the YOGI to Ray Teece who had a right shocker. Ray had the look of the Raul Moat's and Andy james had his taser gun on charge just in case - Ray didn't enjoy his time on the lanes averaging 182 and finishing in 49th
Spot light round.
Because I drove up with Matt Giles this round is going to be called - driving miles and miles with Matt Giles ! - journey up there was uneventful but quite boring, I tried to spice things up with stories about the time the i got run over by a pizza delivery boy and the one about the dog called 'gear box', it was when I started re-living my YAC doubles triumph at Ayelsbury that Matt fell asleep. Once at the bowl Matt quickly ran in the bowl straight to the bar for a pint of the 'bo - maybe it was because he was fatigued from having to listen to me chatter inanely on for nearly 3 hours but Matt struggled at the end of each block having 150games. On the way home he purchased 8 tins of premium strength cider to numb to the pain.
