The so Solid crew unveil their new line up - The finalists (and steve Miller)

finalists

The 3rd tournament of the year was the BTBA organised Northants Singles which was held at 1st bowl Wellingborough - it’s been a while since the tour had last visited here. Entries were not surprisingly low and that meant a jigging about with the format - all bowlers played a 9 game 1st round instead of the original cut after 6. But at 31 men and 13 ladies, that's more then i thought would play. People want the visual's of lane graphs before the event and thanks to Rob Thurlbury we managed to get one - it looked a tough flat pattern and I was wondering how it would play on the lanes if they were how I remembered them, toasted wood.  when we arrived I found the lanes weren't  as toasted as they used to be - but i saw about 7 foot of guardian and then twisters - I knew that it was going to be grizzly, especially for me ! - what analogy can I make.... erm Its like going on a blind date and turning up to find your date is big bruising pre-op tranny with a wonky wig and a hungry look it his/her eyes - you just know its going to end it tears and probably pain.

After practice play I said to my playing partner Matt Miller that par today would be a 190 ! - I was right. It was a grind. James Tidd opened up with a brilliant with 279  then dropped by 73 pins for a 206 still a respectable score, but then dropped again in the third game by another 77 pins for a 129 - but James finished the 9 games 1st on 1943 a 215.8 average - James was only of 4 players to average over 200 - the others being Jamie Bottomly 2nd 1931, Ray Teece 3rd 1824, and John Wells 4th on 1804. The cut to the final was Lee Miller on 1713 a 190 average - I was particularly unhappy about this, as it meant i had to hang around for the little weasel to finish.

It was just Nails ! - not as nails as the PTBC Tolworth last year - but it was still scary. If you missed right it didn't recover, and missed left your ploughed it through the nose, or if you missed two left, it would take off.  Its was a slag ... and when you did get to the pocket you had to hope the twisters weren't going shaft you proper.  Saying all that ..... its doesn't really matter how tough or how easy a pattern is, the good bowlers will be at the top and the not so good bowlers at the bottom - fact aint it - especially over the course of a 15 tournament season - which is why the best bowlers will be in the top 12 in the rankings and the others won't be. Some good bowlers may have a bad day - but they will still be in top 12 come the end of season. - sorry gone off on one there aint I ! - sorry.

YOGI’s .... He made the PTBC TV show at the last tournament, but little briefcase was rubbish here – Ash Iacona finished down 26th averaging 169.7 – exactly the same as show pony lee Chatfield. But the YOGI has to go to Mike Quarry who shot a low 117 game on his way to 310 under ! – that’s a lot under.

Ladies ... Saw Lisa Johns top average 197, with Jo Allsebrook in 2nd on 192.8 average and in third was Autum Chamberlain on a 190.8 average. The cut to the ladies final was set by Rebekah Hamlet on a 183.3 average. - When it’s a tight shot the girls usually bowl better then the men, but even the ladies were struggling.

The finals were round robins.... I watched the first couple of games and the players all ready looked broken, and I came back for the last couple. By then some of the players had hung themselves in the toilets, others were self harming, and I had to talk one of them off the roof. Ray Teece blood and guts it out to take 3rd. The top 2 had stretched out a bit of a lead over the others. John Wells had caught James Tidd and had surged into the lead. But game 7 and 8 it all changed with James shooting a 213 and 268 + two win bonuses - where as John shot 180,178 with only 1 win bonus. That opened it up for james who went on to win by 69 pins.  The ladies final ... It was close and the last game really decided it.

The top were Lisa Johns and Jo Allsebrook - Lisa was in the lead but like so many during the day a horrible ugly game reared its head in the form of a 158, and Jo shot a 190  plus win bonus to grab the title by 35 pins. Katrina MacIver came 3rd averaging 193.3

Well that was that.... I'm all for proper patterns and condition whatever you want to call it,  i just don't think (in my very un trained opinion) that it was the right surface to put that sort of pattern down. I suppose its horses for courses ... On another surface you can perhaps put something like this down, and I don't think there would have too many complaints if they put some thing more 'friendly' down. - And to appease Rob, who’s probably reading this getting angry at me ... It’s good that someone actually thought about it for a change, and we appreciate the graph being publish and there weren't many breakdowns

Brutal scoring

Not sure a 3 game 2nd round is a good idea. Makes it pretty much impossible for people just making the cut to make up ground.

Surely 4 games makes sense?

Views???

It wasn't a cut .... everyone bowled 9 games - there was only 1 cut. And on a 'nails' pattern like that, ground was easy to make up - look at matt chambo ... a 670 block saw him move up about 10 places to get into the final.
